About Cherkassy

Cherkassy was born 700 years ago as a fortress and was known as the centre of resistance against the Polish and Lithuanian influences. At the end of the threat peasants and handicraftsmen began to settle.

Cherkassy is associated with such famous names as Bogdan Khmelnitskiy, Alexander Pushkin , Taras Shevchenko and Petr Chajkovskij.

During the second world war, Cherkassy were one of the major areas of guerrilla resistance; especially during extremely heavy fighting prevalent during one month in 1943, when the Soviet Army defended the Dnieper river.

Now Cherkassy is the regional administrative, industrial and agricultural centre, has some large machine-building industries and is surrounded by numerous farms.

Cherkassy has some large higher educational institutions - pedagogical and polytechnical universities and institutes of business and management; there are a lot of colleges. The majority of the students are young and beautiful girls. Statistics show that for every one man in Cherkassy there are 6 girls. Cherkassy is referred to as the "city of the brides".

Cherkassy has a population of 360 000 and is 200 kilometers to the south of Kiev. It is very green, has many parks, colours, monuments of architecture, churches and museums.

Cherkassy has a coast of a huge reservoir. In summer this is a favourite vacation spot, with sport shooting, horse riding, fishing, boating, distant islands, hunting...

The cost of produce, housing and services are half the price of the capital city, Kiev.

The city has a large drama theatre, lots of monuments of culture, yacht club, railway, river, bus stations and airport. It is a lot of vacation spots, beaches, cafes, hotels. In the last 70 years, the city has attained resort status.

There is a large museum devoted to Ukrainian history in the city of Chigirin, and in Korsun there is an historical museum devoted to the second world war.

Cherkassy is 178 kilometers or 2 hours of driving from the Borispol International Airport in Kiev.

A distinctive feature of Cherkassy women is calmness and diligence. Most have parents who live in nearby villages and have a part-time farm. Therefore the women are both beautiful and very hardworking.

The problems associated with large cities, such as drugs, crime, prostitution and poverty are practically non-existent in this silent, cosy and green city.
